Cinco de Mayo is right around the corner and I thought it would be a perfect time to get my girlfriend’s together. When we were younger (before children and husbands) we would always go out for happy hour for Cinco de Mayo, have drinks, and enjoy all of our Mexican favorites. It’s not as easy these days with all of the family obligations we have now. A happy hour at home is a great idea to get together, and you can’t beat the comfort of your own home.
The premise of our blog here at Chewsy Lovers is building healthy relationships through food and this a great opportunity to do so. All women need a little girl time! So, if you’re long overdue for a ladies night out like me, I’m going to show you in three simple steps how to have a fantastic accessory swap party with your girls for Cinco De Mayo.
1. Planning – Get your game plan together! The key to success of a party of any size is planning. Know what you need, how much of it you need, and where you can get it. I knew I could go to Walmart and pick everything I needed from the food to the decor. I always use a basic planning sheet to outline my party details. You can download my free party menu planning sheet here.
2. Decor – For Cinco de Mayo I like to use bright festive colors like hot pinks, and oranges. Limes and yellows are also great colors. I love paper lanterns because they are fairly inexpensive and make for a nice presentation. If you you’re lucky you can find some that already have the lights in them so if you want to have your happy hour outside on the deck or patio you can and it will be beautiful and nicely lit. Woven baskets, flowers, and even empty cocktail glasses make nice decor. Also, set up a station for the ladies to exchange accessories. Make sure their are plenty of gift bags and tissue paper for them to take home. If you will be swapping as well, use your accessories to decorate the area.
3. No-Fuss Menu – Honey. I love a menu I don’t have to exhaust myself preparing! Quite naturally since this is a Mexican party, you want to serve authentic Mexican Food. I picked up a few boxes of Delimex Taquitos and Tamales and literally cut my menu prep and cooking time in half. Yummy, and SUPER convenient. If you check out the Frozen aisles at Wal-Mart they will be where the “Snacks/Appetizers” are. I bought Beef Tamales, Beef Taquitos, and Chicken Taquitos. They also have Beef and Chicken Rolled Tacos.
Serve these great party foods with chips and salsa, guacamole, fruity drinks, and homemade churros and you have a full spread! I topped some taquitos with fresh pico de gallo, just for added variety. Don’t forget to add toppings like cheese and sour cream to the serving lineup. You don’t want to spend all day cooking when you’re trying to host a fabulous party. I saved time with Delimex, with just a quick pop in the oven. I set out the rest of the food and made churros while they were cooking. Everything was finished at the same time. THAT’s how I like to party.
Let your girlfriends know about two weeks in advance so they can plan to be at your party. Always have bottled waters, and an alternative for those who may not drink alcohol. I made a Strawberry Mango slush (4 fresh mangoes peeled, 1 cup. Strawberry Margarita Mix, 2 cups of ice, Juice of one lime, pulsed in a blender). Be specific about the swap, what qualifies as an accessory, (I personally like to swap nail polishes) and how many to bring. Alright! You’re all set! Have fun!
